Do you suffer from maskne? Or, mouth mask acne!

We hear more and more about skin complaints caused by the frequent wearing of mouthguards, think of irritations and blemishes around the mouth area. Mouth caps are almost impossible to imagine our society without, and although they should contribute to our health, there are a number of drawbacks associated with them. Namely, the new condition “maskne,” skin irritations caused purely by wearing mouthguards!

What causes maskne?

Wearing a mouth mask closes the skin and prevents the pores in the skin from breathing. This allows sweat, sebum and waste products to accumulate under your mouth mask and therefore the skin cannot get rid of these unwanted substances. The sweltering effect under the mouth mask increases bacteria and you have to deal with mechanical friction on the skin, also known as acne mechanics. All of this can lead to skin irritation, inflammation, as well as red and/or dry skin around the mouth, cheeks and chin. The skin barrier is no longer intact and as a result, skin problems occur.

What can you do about skin irritations caused by mouth masks (maskne)?

The most important thing is to let the skin air out! We also recommend that you take good care of your skin from the inside and drink enough. If you suffer from skin congestion due to excessive sebum and sweat and/or irritation from wearing a mask frequently, we recommend that you keep your skin clean and use the right skin care products. It is important to cleanse your skin properly in the morning and evening. For this, you can think of the Gentle Cleanser from SkinCeuticals or the Advanced Cleanser from Dermaceutic. In addition, a good exfoliant also improves your skin condition. And it keeps sebum from accumulating in the sebaceous gland because the drainage channel is kept clear. From mature skin with wrinkles to acne-prone skin, blemishes or lots of pigmentation on the face from excessive sun exposure: almost any skin problem improves with exfoliation. For this, the Foamer 15 from Dermaceutic or the Glycolic Renewal Cleanser from SkinCeuticals, for example, is a good option. For chapped and open skin, it is important to restore the skin’s calmness. Cream L from Renophase is great for this, as it has a hydrating effect and soothes the skin at the same time. Hydrating serums can also be a solution, such as Universkin’s Nexultra H or SkinCeuticals’ Hydrating B5. For mildly irritated skin, soothing serums or a fine facial mask, such as the Phyto Corrective serum or the Phyto Corrective Masque from SkinCeuticals can be used.
