Causes of pigmentation spots The problem

Almost everyone gets brown spots over the years, both men and women. These pigmentation spots occur mainly on the face, hands, décolleté and arms. These spots are also called hyperpigmentation or lentigo solaris. Pigmentation can occur when the skin is not properly protected from sunlight. You may also develop pigmentation spots due to medication or PIP (Post Inflammatory Pigmentation). If you are pregnant, the spots may become more severe. Then it is also called pregnancy mask or melasma.

Pigmentation spot removal with laser treatment The treatment

Pigment spots can be treated at the Van Rosmalen Kliniek in several ways. Laser treatments can be very effective, but also, for example, a chemical peel or the cryopen, an instrument that can freeze the spot to the millimeter. We also have a wide range of skin-care cosmeceuticals. These products have a high concentration of active ingredients that will lighten the pigment spots. You can simply use these at home, we are happy to advise you on this. Depending on the type of pigmentation, your skin type and skin tone is determined which treatment is most suitable for you. A combination treatment can also be applied for optimal results

After the pigmentation laser treatment After the treatment

It is important that you allow your skin to rest after the treatment. Avoid peeling creams and scrub creams for the first period, avoid bright sun, massages at the beautician and other beauty treatments. You will receive detailed instructions from our skin therapists on what to do and what not to do. They can also advise you on the skin care products we use and sell at the clinic

Radiant skin The results

Pigment spots will fade quickly, your skin will start to look brighter again. Of course, new spots may appear over time. That’s why we always recommend you come back for maintenance treatments to permanently remove your pigmentation spots.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are pigmentation spots?

Pigmentation spots are dark discolorations on the skin caused by an overproduction of melanin (the pigment that gives skin its color). This can be triggered by:

  • Sun exposure – UV radiation stimulates melanin production, which can lead to spots.

  • Hormonal fluctuations – Pregnancy, birth control, and menopause can cause melasma or the “pregnancy mask.”

  • Skin aging – Age spots or liver spots often develop over the years.

  • Inflammation or skin irritation – Scars from acne or other skin conditions can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

How can you get rid of pigmentation spots?

We offer various treatments to reduce pigmentation spots:

Medical peels – Remove the upper skin layers and stimulate cell renewal
Laser treatments – Target deeper pigmentation and accelerate the breakdown of melanin
Microneedling – Stimulates collagen production and helps fade superficial pigmentation spots
Cosmeceuticals – Custom-recommended creams and serums to support and maintain results

During a free consultation, we will assess which treatment best suits your skin type and pigmentation concerns.

How effective are medical peelings to remove pigmentation spots?

A peel helps reduce pigmentation spots by exfoliating the skin and accelerating cell renewal. This results in:

  • An even skin tone and a fresher appearance

  • Reduction of pigmentation spots

  • Smoother skin texture through collagen stimulation

For deeper pigmentation or melasma, a combination treatment with laser therapy or skincare products may be necessary.

How does IPL/laser treatment to fade pigmentation spots work?

During the treatment for pigmentation spot removal with IPL, the beam of light from the IPL device penetrates the skin and breaks the pigment into tiny particles. The pigment then rises to the surface, causing the pigmentation spot to initially darken in color. After about a week, the pigment can be wiped off the skin like a haze, and the spot will have faded or even completely disappeared.

When do I choose laser treatment to fade pigmentation spots?

Almost everyone gets pigmentation spots over the years, both men and women. These pigmentation spots occur mainly on the face, hands, décolletage and arms. Do you suffer from hyperpigmentation and want a fresh and even appearance? Then this treatment offers a good solution for you

Is a laser treatment to fade pigmentation spots painful?

The sensation during an IPL or laser treatment can be compared to shooting a rubber band against the skin. It can be an unpleasant feeling for a while, but it is often not perceived as painful. In addition, it also depends on the treatment area. Some areas may be more sensitive, such as the area around the nose

How long does a laser treatment to fade pigment spots take?

A full facial treatment takes about 45 minutes. If the neck and décolleté are also treated, a treatment takes 60 to 75 minutes.

How many laser treatments do I need to fade my pigmentation spots?

On average, 4-6 treatments are needed for the best results. Depending on the type of pigmentation spot, skin type and skin tone, it is determined which treatment is most suitable for you. Then the number of treatments is considered. A combination treatment can be applied for optimal results

How long does it take to see results after the treatment(s)?

This depends on the type of pigmentation spot, skin type and skin tone. Superficial pigmentation spots will fade quickly, leaving your skin looking radiant again. To permanently remove pigmentation spots, several repeat treatments are required. Our skin therapists will give you more information about this

Will my skin peel after the treatment(s)?

Your skin will not peel after a laser treatment. It is important that you allow your skin to rest after a laser treatment. The skin therapist treating you will advise you on this and give you various instructions

How long does it take before I am presentable again after my treatment?

This depends on the extent of the pigmentation. This is because the spots initially darken as the pigment comes to the surface. After about a week, the pigment can be wiped off the skin as a haze and the spot has faded or even disappeared completely. So it varies from person to person, but you just remain presentable

Can I combine this treatment with other treatments?

The possibility of combining laser treatment with other treatment techniques, is definitely there! If you would like to have several skin areas treated, a peeling or microneedling (RF) treatment can help to fulfill your wishes. If you suffer from wrinkles or red skin, these indications can also be treated. Of course, our skin therapists first look at the condition of your skin before performing any combination treatments.
