“But I already visit the beautician regularly, right?” A skin therapist is quite often confused with a beautician. Even though both work with the skin, they are two different specialties. Read all about the skin therapist and beautician and their areas of expertise below!
Both a skin therapist and a beautician are working with the skin. The main difference is that a beautician focuses only on the cosmetic side of the skin, focusing on skin care. The skin therapist focuses on both the cosmetic and medical side of the skin, specializing in various skin conditions. These include couperose, rosacea, pigmentation spots, acne or melasma. Another important specialty of the skin therapist is improving the skin structure, in order to combat skin aging, among other things. A beautician has completed a level 3 MBO education and does not have a protected title. In contrast, a skin therapist has completed a 4-year bachelor HBO Skin Therapy. The title skin therapist is a protected title and they must therefore register in the Paramedics Quality Register. For this, accreditation points must be obtained to renew their registration through continuing education.
In addition to being registered in the Paramedics Quality Register, skin therapists also fall under the BIG (Individual Healthcare Professions Act) article 34. In the future, this will partially change to article 3. What does that mean? Laser and IPL treatments are considered high-risk operations. If not performed properly, complications can arise. This is why the government wants laser and IPL treatments to be performed only by skin therapists. Beauty specialists are not covered by the BIG law. However, qualified beauticians are registered with the professional association ANBOS.
Within the Van Rosmalen Kliniek there is intensive cooperation as a skin therapist with the cosmetic doctors. Treatments are combined for the best results, also clients are multidisciplinary consultation so that everyone is individually assessed and a customized treatment plan. Together the practitioners ensure that the skin becomes firmer, smoother, fresher and more beautiful.
