What exactly is hyaluronic acid?

What is hyaluronic acid and what exactly does it do? Hyaluronic acid is regularly incorporated into serums, masks and moisturizers, so chances are you too have a product on your shelves at home with this skincare ingredient! In addition, fillers are often hyaluronic acid-based! With the word “acid” you may think of a peeling, but here it has nothing to do with it. In fact, it is very gentle, skin-friendly and has been an anti-aging ingredient for years. Read all about it in our blog below:

What is hyaluronic acid?

Naturally, we already have it in our bodies! The natural form is attached to collagen for strength and binds to water. It is a sugar and falls under the body’s own glucose building blocks. These building blocks are needed to keep the skin supple and elastic. Hyaluronic acid is a champion of hydration and a true thirst quencher! When the skin is well hydrated, it looks tighter and firmer.

What does hyaluronic acid do?

Hyaluronic acid occurs as the body’s own substance in the skin and has a very powerful function. Namely, to bind and retain large amounts of moisture. It can thus hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. When this ingredient enters the skin, it can bind moisture both from the air and from deeper skin layers. In fact, it attracts moisture to itself. And in this way, superficial fine lines can be filled in. If you don’t have fine lines yet, hyaluronic acid makes the skin more hydrated, so it’s also perfect for skin with a drier texture. On the other hand, you can also use it preventively as an anti-aging ingredient. However, it is important that you consistently use a hyaluronic acid-based product, as it has a rapid breakdown. Therefore, for any age and skin type, it is nice to provide this with an extra dose of hyaluronic acid. Moreover, it also ensures that the skin barrier recovers. And when the skin barrier is intact, little to no moisture can also evaporate from the skin. Likewise, harmful external influences then also have less chance of causing cell damage, because when cell damage occurs, the skin also ages faster.

The difference between young and older skin

Younger skin generally has plenty of the body’s own hyaluronic acid. In contrast, this is not true of older skin. Unfortunately, from the age of 40, the body’s natural production activity of hyaluronic acid decreases. This is reflected in the lesser firming that the skin offers. In addition, the skin becomes drier because it loses moisture faster.

The benefits of hyaluronic acid at a glance:

  • It loves every skin!
  • It is both a moisturizer and an anti-aging ingredient.
  • The effect is quickly felt: smooth, soft and hydrated skin.
  • It is also used for  filler treatments.

Hyaluronic acid & injectable treatments

The moment there is a lot of volume loss and people are bothered by, for example, a tired look or a angry look, is also often chosen for a filler treatment based on hyaluronic acid, among other ingredients. Fillers are ideal for restoring a rested and fresh look to your appearance in a natural and subtle way. Do you want to give your skin a deep hydration boost? Skin therapy & hyaluronic acid

Our skin therapists also use hyaluronic acid frequently during treatments. This can be in the form of a hyaluronic acid as an intermediate for microneedling. With microneedling, they make the skin absorb it faster. Prior to injecting hyaluronic acid, a chemical peel can also be performed. A peeling stimulates cell division, but also provides extra hydration in the skin! They also perform the Dallas treatment. The neck and decollete are often forgotten skin areas. And often crave more hydration and attention. The Dallas treatment consists of a peeling and a hyaluronic acid injected superficially. This fills in fine lines and promotes hydration. A perfect hydration boost!
