These days we can’t escape it. Face filters are hot and trending on social media. Well-known influencers or celebrities show their most beautiful selfies, but whether these are as “natural” as they appear does not always turn out to be true in practice. These filters not only make colors in a photo or video more beautiful, but also even out skin, thicken lips and slim the face. This hides characteristic features in the face under a filter and gives a distorted image to society. Often the link here is made to cosmetic surgery and it is thought that everyone will look the same because of botox and fillers. However, this is not true.
Cosmetic doctor KNMG Annemarie van Rosmalen and influencer and top stylist Fred van Leer discuss the subject of facial filters and why, precisely within cosmetic medicine, tailored advice is so important.
Doctor Annemarie: “People say that Instagram faces all look alike. You and I know that I do custom treatment. You probably do the same as a stylist. How exactly do you do that per person?”
Fred van Leer: “Very honestly if you dress Caroline Tensen, you dress her differently than Irene Moors or Chantal Janzen. So you really look at: ‘which person do I have in front of me?’ You do that too, because you can’t do the same with my face as you can with another person who comes here.”
“And the fact that everyone looks alike, that has nothing to do with botox or fillers. That has to do with everyone using the same filter. I also sometimes use a filter and then everyone thinks, ‘you’ve done too much your lips.’ Then I think, “girlfriend, it’s a filter that makes fat lips”. So I’m of the opinion that people are really confused by all the filters we use, which I really like by the way.”
“The essence of the story is that everyone is different and therefore needs a different approach in terms of treatments, so that you are and remain precisely unique. This is actually only possible with a good doctor. Sure, sometimes people think, you do too much. But very honestly, point out to me what I do. No one can point that out. We know, it’s enough.” – says Fred, laughing.
“But that’s so important, that you go to a good doctor you trust. Because you really do give something away; you give your face. So you have to feel comfortable, there has to be a bond and the doctor has to know what he/she is doing.”
“Very honestly, I’m not judging anybody. But it cannot be that for €1,000 you get the same face as Kim Kardashian. Simply because it’s not possible, since her face may have been tinkered with for a billion. But that’s completely beside the point.”
Doctor Annemarie: “Yes, she didn’t do it for 1,000.00 euros either.”
Fred van Leer: “But no way.”
“So people, now don’t think: ‘for €1,000,- I look like Kim Kardashian‘. No girlfriend, then you look like her rotten stepsister.” – says Fred laughing.
“No but it’s so important. How long have I been coming to you? For six or seven years. When I just came to you, you also performed different treatments than today.”
Doctor Annemarie: “Yes, it is. Through time, of course, you also have people you’re going to dress and style differently. And of course trends come along, but not everyone wants to go with the trend and not everyone fits the trend. I also have to deal with this within my field.”
Fred van Leer: “But are there any trends in faces?”
Doctor Annemarie: “Yes, because it is quite a trend now, for example, to do a lot of lips. In some countries that’s also a culture status. So that means that in those countries you have an increased social economic status if you can show that you have had that treatment. Still, this trend doesn’t suit everyone and there are plenty of people who would rather undergo another treatment, think a liquid facelift or tighten the jawline.”
Fred van Leer: “No, because it’s what you say: customization. Everybody wants something different. If I also see my own pictures from four years ago, the difference is very big and I always want something different too.”
“People will always think something about it, especially in this industry you know all about that Annemarie, but I don’t care.”
“The most important thing is, that everyone is different and unique. Life does get very boring if we all look alike. Above all, get good advice from a knowledgeable doctor!”
