Losing a lot of weight in a short period of time; how does this affect your face?

According to CBS figures, about 57 percent of all adults in the Netherlands have done something to lose weight. A large percentage of these ultimately fail to lose those extra pounds by adjusting an eating pattern or a sports schedule. The biggest annoyance with this group of people is that they don’t lose weight fast enough. Nowadays, in addition to the well-known crash diets or dietary supplements, there are also medications used for diabetics to lower blood sugar. Saxenda®, Mysimba®, Alli®, Orlistat® or Xenical®, in addition to medications for diabetics, are now known as aids to lose weight quickly. Since April 1, the use of Saxenda® in people suffering from obesity is also reimbursed by health insurance companies in some cases. By injecting these medications, you become satiated faster and will lose a lot of weight in a short period of time. By losing a lot of weight in a short period of time, you not only see changes on the body, but also in the face. Doctor Michèle tells you more about this in this blog!

The consequences summed up!

When you lose weight quickly, it affects various aspects of your body, including your face. These specific facial changes can vary depending on factors such as genetics, age, how much weight you lose and how fast you do it. The most noticeable aspects are:

Subcutaneous fat tissue decreases: Rapid weight loss causes subcutaneous fat tissue in the face to decrease. This will reduce skin tension, which can make you look less fit, more slumped, tired or older.

Sagging of the skin: When you lose weight quickly, sagging in the face increases faster. This is especially noticeable in the cheeks. You will notice more sunken cheeks or increased hamster cheeks. Also, more folds and deeper lines will become more visible in the face, such as marionette lines, a deep nose-lip fold or you will get more drooping corners of the mouth.

Visible cheekbones and jawline: As fat tissue decreases, your cheekbones and jawline can appear more prominent. In a full face, this makes for nicer contours, but in an empty face, it often looks more severe and makes you look older.

Dark circles and bags under the eyes: Rapid weight loss, especially if accompanied by an unhealthy diet or lack of sleep, can lead to dark circles and bags under the eyes. Decreased volume creates emptiness under the eyes, visible as puffiness.

Wrinkles and lines: A well-filled subcutaneous fat layer, gives a nice tightening of the skin and can make the skin look younger. Sudden loss of this firm layer can mask the true sagging of the superficial layer of skin. Lines and folds become more visible.

Every advantage has its downside. Nevertheless, the consequences just mentioned can be remedied by a cosmetic doctor with a hybrid filler! But what exactly is that and what are the differences from a hyaluronic acid filler?

What is the difference between a hyaluronic acid filler and a hybrid filler?

Most fillers consist of hyaluronic acid, a molecule found naturally in the skin. Hyaluronic acid fillers are great for supporting tissue, especially in the deeper layers. Consider sagging and sagging along the jawline. A hyaluronic acid filler is also used to replenish a lack of volume, as is the case with dark circles under the eyes, for example. A hybrid filler, such as Radiesse® or HArmonyCa® consists of hyaluronic acid just like a regular filler, but in a lower percentage. In addition, it consists of a biostimulator, which stimulates the collagen’s own production. The combination of hyaluronic acid and collagen complements each other and forms a strong network. Because the percentage of hyaluronic acid in the hybrid filler is lower than in the regular filler, the hybrid filler will attract less moisture. Therefore, the hybrid filler is better suited for superficial placement and does not give a “puffy” effect to the face. A hybrid filler can mimic the subcutaneous fat layer while activating the dermal layer to produce more collagen. So, when someone is looking sunken and sagging skin due to rapid weight loss, we deploy the hybrid filler to help someone look fit again with long-lasting and natural results!

The 6 benefits of a hybrid filler!

Now that we know the differences between a hyaluronic acid filler and a hybrid filler, let’s start listing the benefits!

  1. A hybrid filler slows down the aging process of the skin – perhaps the most important benefit of all.
  2. Less chance of a puffy face or an overstuffed face, because there is less hyaluronic acid in hybrid fillers.
  3. Many more effects on the skin: increased firmness and elasticity.
  4. Ideal for the superficial layer of skin to treat fine lines and wrinkles.
  5. Very natural effect because the facial contours do not change.
  6. Effect of collagen stimulation continues for months, making the result visible for a very long time.
